Bamboo in the Wind Korea Limited Edition Fountain Pen

The Four Gentlemen is a Korea-exclusive collection created in collaboration between Italian luxury writing instrument maker Montegrappa and Korea.

Inspired by the plum blossom, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo, the collection offers a contemporary interpretation of the qualities these four plants traditionally represent: integrity, dignity, perseverance, and unwavering resolve. In Korea, they are closely associated with the spirit of the seonbi—scholars who remained true to their principles even in the face of adversity.

The collection consists of four designs, each devoted to one of the Four Gentlemen. Following the Plum Blossom in Snow, Orchid in Quiet Elegance, and Enduring Chrysanthemum editions, we now present the fourth edition.

Bamboo in the Wind

When the wind blows, bamboo bends with its movement. Its leaves flutter and its stems yield gently to the breeze, returning to their upright form as the wind passes. In this balance of flexibility and strength lies a quiet wisdom: the ability to move with change while remaining true to oneself. Bamboo in the Wind captures these qualities in a single writing instrument.

In Korea, bamboo’s upright stems and enduring green have long symbolized steadfast principles and resolve, while its pure, dignified character has been associated with the integrity of the seonbi. Traditional Korean paintings of bamboo in the wind express this same spirit: preserving one’s convictions and living with honesty through the changes of the world. Bamboo in the Wind carries these enduring values into the art of writing today.

Deep greens flowing into fresh yellow-green tones evoke the vitality of bamboo stems, while subtle touches of gold recall the warmth of sunlight on their surface. The sweeping patterns along the pen suggest the movement of wind through a bamboo grove. Rich and delicate shades intertwine, bringing a sense of fluidity to the pen’s slender silhouette.

The transparent barrel, through which light gently passes, symbolizes bamboo’s hollow interior. This space gives visual expression to the collection’s interpretation of integrity: a clear and upright heart, free from greed and self-interest. Just as bamboo grows upright with a hollow core, the design evokes a way of life that lets go of desires that cloud the mind while remaining faithful to the values one holds dear.

The custom resin was handcrafted exclusively for this collection by American artisan barrel maker Turnt Pen Co., then shaped and finished in Italy using Montegrappa’s renowned craftsmanship. Due to the handmade nature of the material, the colors, patterns, and flow of the resin vary from pen to pen, giving every fountain pen a distinctive appearance of its own.

Only 40 pieces will be produced worldwide.
