The Four Gentlemen is a Korea-exclusive collection created in collaboration between Italian luxury writing instrument maker Montegrappa and Korea.

Inspired by the plum blossom, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo, the collection offers a contemporary interpretation of the qualities these four plants traditionally represent: integrity, dignity, perseverance, and unwavering resolve. In Korea, they are closely associated with the spirit of the seonbi—scholars who remained true to their principles even in the face of adversity.

The collection consists of four designs, each devoted to one of the Four Gentlemen. Following the Plum Blossom in Snow and Orchid in Quiet Elegance editions, we now present the third edition.

Enduring Chrysanthemum
Korean Chrysanthemums come into bloom only after the splendor of the season has passed, at the very end of late autumn. While other flowers bloom and fade, the chrysanthemum remains steadfast in its place, a quality that has long been compared in Korea to the seonbi—scholars who remained true to their principles and integrity, unmoved by the changing currents of the world. Revealing an even deeper and more distinct beauty in the late season, the chrysanthemum embodies a noble dignity that endures unchanged through time.

Enduring Chrysanthemum interprets this spirit of the chrysanthemum in the Korean Four Gentlemen tradition through warm white tones and a shifting spectrum of light. The refined white expresses the chrysanthemum’s noble and dignified character, while the luminous colors that subtly transform with the light evoke the moment when, after enduring the passage of time and remaining steadfast in its place, it finally reveals its brilliance—the “Light of Late Autumn.”

Like the chrysanthemum that remains true to its path even after the season of splendor has passed, everyone has a moment when their own light emerges at the end of their own time. There is no need to move faster than others; the time spent quietly and steadily following one’s own path ultimately becomes a light that belongs to no one else. Enduring Chrysanthemum captures the integrity and noble dignity preserved over time, and the beauty that grows ever more radiant after a long and steadfast journey.

The custom resin was handcrafted exclusively for this collection by American artisan barrel maker Turnt Pen Co., then shaped and finished in Italy using Montegrappa’s renowned craftsmanship. Due to the handmade nature of the material, the colors, patterns, and flow of the resin vary from pen to pen, giving every fountain pen a distinctive appearance of its own.

Only 40 pieces will be produced worldwide. Like the chrysanthemum that reveals its deepest beauty at the end of the season, Enduring Chrysanthemum captures the integrity and noble dignity preserved through time, and the radiant beauty that emerges after a long and steadfast journey.
